Children's Menus

North Carolina ranks 5th worst for childhood obesity in America.  So, someone please tell me why almost every children's menu remains covered with macaroni & cheese, chicken fingers, hot dogs, and grilled cheese, all with a side of french fries.  I don't get it!
Abigail is now old enough that I glance at the children's menu whenever we go out to eat to see what I might order for her.  Almost always, Tony or I end up just choosing a meal for ourselves that we can share with her, because the children's choices include NOTHING healthy.
At home, we do our best to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, and limited bread and pasta.  We almost never fry anything in oil, and besides an occasional chocolate milk, we drink sugar-free liquids and water.  Abbie eats the same stuff we do, for the most part-- minus the iron-fortified baby cereal I use to make her "casseroles".  She just had her 15 month check-up where she measured 30 inches and weighed 21 pounds, 7 ounces (50th and 40th percentiles respectively).  She still has plenty of healthy fat on her, which makes me worry about those kids hanging out in the 90th+ weight percentile.
Do kids really eat tons of high saturated fat foods all the time?  Or, are restaurants just not willing to go out on a limb and offer grilled meats and vegetables?  Of course, they make a killing on their $4.99 hotdog and fries, but do they understand that they are perpetuating the childhood obesity epidemic in our country?
I will say that I have been pleased to see offerings like mandarin oranges at such places as Wendy's and my cousin's restaurant in Wilmington.  And, yesterday I was blown away that McCormick & Schmick's offered grilled salmon on the children's menu (next to 7 other fried and/or fatty dishes).  But, for the most part, everywhere I look, kids are being offered a whole bunch of fattening foods.  And then we hope that 1-3 days of PE a week is going to take care of it!  Perhaps Michelle Obama should expand her healthy kids program to include regulations for restaurants and supermarket shelves...
