Sick Kids

Last week, Abbie came down with some crazy virus.  It knocked her out for a few days, meaning she missed almost the whole week of school.  She napped 2 or 3 days in a row, which is a big deal, since she doesn't really nap much anymore.  Then there was the "24 hr waiting period" post-fever, which turned into a 48-hr waiting period because that snarky fever came back for a short bit just when I thought we were over it.
Meanwhile, Jason was battling a cold.  It's his first real illness in months.  Prior to this, I was actually convinced that the supplements we've been giving him were working to boost his immune system.  Now, I'm not totally sure.  Of course, I guess everyone has to get sick once in a while, so we'll keep using them until they prove ineffective.
Back to the cold... it hasn't been like the usual cold, where you get knocked out the first couple of days, then plateau with some tolerable symptoms for a while.  More like, he got mildly sick and stayed that way for a week, but continued to play and be active.  Then, two days ago, Jason suddenly started a fever (still battling congestion and some cough).  He had been having trouble sleeping at night, and on Tuesday night, it was pretty rough.  By Wednesday morning, he was running a fever of 102.5.  That day, he took at 5.5 hr nap. His temperature continued to hang out around there through Thursday.  I treated with Tylenol and Motrin regularly, and on Thursday, even overlapped the doses because it just wasn't hold his temp down.  After his nap, Jason looked pretty bad.  He was turning pale with purple bags under his eyes, and he kept shivering.  I checked his temperature, and he was at 105!  We canceled Tony's birthday date, and I took Jason to Urgent Care.
While we were at Urgent Care, Jason's fever did come down, but I don't feel like I came out with a definitive answer about his illness.  They ruled out pneumonia in the lungs, then told me "he could still have viral pneumonia".  They ruled out ear infections and any other visible problem, but determined that he has some sort of bacterial infection due to elevated white cells in his blood.  They labeled it sinusitis, but I'm not really sure how they came to that conclusion, unless it was just that they could think of nothing else it could be.  Nevertheless, Jason is now on antibiotics (for the millionth time in his short little life), and he's seeming a bit better this morning.
We're off to the pediatrician later this morning for a follow-up.  Hopefully, the answer is: He's responding well to treatment and should be fine.

During all of this, I've had a good dose of "changing priorities" with a healthy side of "helpful husband".  I have worked out very little (can't take the kids to the gym childcare when they're sick!), and had less time to do my own stuff.  At the same time, Tony has been wonderful about being home to help whenever he can.  He is able to work from home to allow me to take one of the kids to the doctor or an activity, while the other kid plays quietly or rests at home.  While I'm very grateful for Tony's flexibility and willingness to help, I'm certainly looking forward to getting "back to normal" soon!
