Abbie's class has been studying apples in school this month. They have tasted different varieties, made artwork based on apples, and even learned the "seasons of the apple tree".
So, today I took Abbie to Millstone Creek Orchards in Ramsuer, NC to pick apples. We took a hayride out to some of the young trees - 4 years old, just like Abbie! - and picked a variety of Gold apples. Since the trees were so young, they were short enough for Abbie to be able to pick the apples herself, which was fantastic. She did a great job twisting the best ones off the tree and counting them as she placed them in the basket.
After getting our gold apples, we ventured over to the Arkansas Black apple trees to get just one very special apple. You see, we learned from the farmer today that the Arkansas Black apple is just like the apple that Snow White ate. So, of course, we had to have one!
Before and after our hayride, we hung out on the grounds, checking out the pumpkins, picking hay and straw grass, tire-swinging, and playing with the other kids. We even ran into one of Abbie's friends from school.
At home, we made two Apple Crisps - one for us and one for our neighbors, The Marinos. It only took 3 apples (and we have lots of dessert leftover!), because they were so large. We still have plenty to slice up for lunches. And, Abbie will be taking the Snow White apple to school for Show & Tell tomorrow.
