Today, I have the privilege of caring for two precious girls. Due to some mix-ups on work schedules and child care, I was lucky to be asked by my friends, Jamie and Laura, to keep their daughter, Kaylee, for the day. Let me tell you, she is a bundle of energy and joy! It's really neat to see her and Abbie side by side as they play.
Kaylee can run circles around the house telling herself gibberish stories, or stand in the bathroom listening to her echoing voice over and over, while Abbie is easily satisfied to sit in the living room listening to music for 30 minute stretches or longer.
Kaylee takes her time eating, enjoying each bite and paying attention to several other things going on in between bites. Abbie, on the other hand, scarfs down her food like it just might be her last meal. Figuring out how to time their meals together is a little challenging, especially because Abbie will request even more food if she sees that others are still eating after she is done. But, we've managed through two meals today just fine.
What I love most about today is the feeling of reassurance that I now have about my future with two kids. I have cared for other friends' kids several times in the past, and Tony has, too. But, this is the first time that I've had two to myself all day, including meals and naps. It's a good feeling to know that yes, it's going to be a little more to handle (and of course i know that a newborn will require a different type of attention than these toddlers), but I can totally do it, and it's - dare I say this??- FUN!
I'm really looking forward to finding out what the personality of my second child will be like. Will they be as calm-natured as Abbie, then surprise me with their crazy screaming tantrums? Or will they be wildly active from the start and drain my energy every day? Will they love books and music or prefer to run about banging on stuff? Will they tell me stories and giggle at Tony's jokes? Who knows! I sure an anxious to find out!
By the way, the kids are napping now. And just in case Tony reads this, I'll throw in: I've already managed to shower and run a load of laundry, so yes, I'm taking a short break to blog. And now, I head back to sort and fold clothes! :)
