Trapped in Sick Bay

There have been approximately 4 days in the last 6 weeks that Jason has not been sick.  On top of that, Tony, Abbie, and I have each taken our turns at being sick.  It has been truly exhausting.  Jason has gone through at least 2 colds, 3 ear infections, several fevers, and a cough.  Abbie is on cold #2 and seems to be developing the cough that I have (diagnosis questionable) in addition to now having an ear infection.  I have been suffering from severe cough/bronchitis for over a week, which led to straining the muscles around my chest wall pretty badly.  Thank goodness Tony has not been sick since his cold a month ago, because he has been able to step up and take care of us invalids.

All of this illness has caused some major changes in how our household operates...
  • "Sleeping through the night" is a foreign concept.  I can remember only one night on which we sleep for 6 hours without waking.  In general, we are waking every 1-3 hours.  Exhaustion has taken over.
  • Patience is wearing very thin, and tempers flare often.
  • We have been eating a ton of junk.  Especially in the last 2-3 weeks, I've been so tired and overwhelmed during the day that meals are thrown together at the last minute, or we just eat ready-made stuff.  During the day, I pretty much don't eat... except for the junk food I shove down when my body screams from hunger around 3:30pm!
  • Working out is on the back-burner due to exhaustion (and muscle injury for me).
  • Jason is now taking formula.  I have been pump-n-dumping since last Friday, because I'm on too many meds and there isn't any information to show whether or not they are safe for babies.  I really hate the bottle-feeding for lots of reasons:
    • formula is expensive  (thank you Dr's office for giving me some free samples today!)
    • formula STINKS!  It stinks by itself, it stinks when spit-up, it completely REEKS when pooped.
    • Jason wants to nurse whenever I try to feed him.  I feel so bad that I cannot nurse him right now, and it's frustrating to fight him to take the bottle.
    • washing bottles and pump accessories multiple times a day is time-consuming, annoying, etc... I really don't know how other parents do this!
  • I have to keep a list of all of the meds we are taking and when, so i don't forget or mess up!
"the pharmacy" of our vitamins and medicines (not counting the antibiotics in the fridge!)
We are really looking forward to the day that everyone is well AND sleeping through the night again!

What meds are you on? PLEASE don't stop breastfeeding unless you absolutely have to... could mean more sickness for the babe...

I had enough breastmilk stored to last a few days , stretched with some formula. It should only be about 3 days of straight formula, as I am hoping to quit most symptom meds by tomorrow afternoon. I am pumping and will hopefully be nursing again (at least during the day) by Saturday. Sadly, nursing hasn't seemed to keep him from getting sick over and over as it is. :/

I hope you guys are all feeling better very soon. I took Billy to the pediatrician a few weeks ago because he had had a cold since THANKSGIVING (never a fever, just a runny nose, occasional cough, etc.). She said it's not uncommon for toddlers to get 6-8 colds throughout the winter. Poor kids. Also, I did read somewhere the other day that you can refrigerate your pump parts in between pumping sessions. (I wouldn't do it for several days in a row or anything, just same-day pumping.) Hope that helps?
