I'm beginning to believe that my child is determined to be bald. A few weeks ago, I discovered massive amounts of hair in her bed. I started freaking out about what was causing it and did lots of research. After observing her a lot, and consulting with the doctor, we determined that she was twirling and pulling her hair as a means of self-soothing. She started wearing mittens to bed about 10 days ago and has done very well. The collection of hair in her bed has stopped.
Then, this morning, I witnessed her reach up, out of the blue, and yank out 5 hairs. I about died! At this rate, she's going to have bald spots for a VERY long time! I really thought mittens at night was the greatest solution, but now it looks like we have a daytime habit to kick, too.
It's really sad, because she has such beautiful hair. It is (was) nice and thick, and she's even getting some pretty highlights from playing in the sun. But, now, when I pull it back into a ponytail, her bald spots are so very obvious. It makes me want to cry. How do I teach her that what she is doing is not OK, and literally self-destructive?
